Wochenzettel 17,42:
„Je suis Darth Vader“

Time flies and so the master students have been part of the chair circle in the master lab for seven weeks already. The week started with an intense debate about Adorno’s essay „cultural industry“ and the question wether culture can be seen as mass deception. It was asserted, that following Adorno’s pessimistic point of view, there lives a villian in all of us as designers that only thinks in traget groups. So we are all a „Darth Vader“, as Prof. Dr. Weltzien stated.

We don’t care about the individual but only about numbers of clicks. As a result, even resisting the system becomes a product immediately. In comparison, the essay from Keith Negus painted a more positive view of the world. He explained, that in the creative industry, creativity, society and the entire industry are all interconnected and depending upon each other.

Thursday and Friday the 4th Kurt-Schwitters-Symposium of design theory took place. Focussing upon the subject „Design and Mimesis“ the lecturers explained the imitation of nature being dispute, admiration and/or critique within the context of the design process. During two interesting days, subjects such as primeval forests in Germany, bio hacking, animal-human-symbiosis and bionics in interior design have been explained to us.

Regine Rapp deliberated that such a quantity of microorganisms are living within us, that we are carrying as much non-human DNA within us, that we must speak about our individuality more in terms of a „we“ rather than an „I“. The coming weeks may show to what extent this entire input may be integrated into our master thesis.

Until then have a look on our Facebook and Instagram.
